Women in Logistics and Trucking
Mother’s Day is right around the corner. To honor all the mothers, we are diving into the vital role that women play in the logistics and trucking industries. Despite being a male dominated industry, the job description of a truck driver does not favor one over the other, and in the trucking industry, men and women receive the same pay and benefits.Women make up 52% of management across all occupations. Within the logistics industry, women compose 31.5% of employees in the warehouse and storage sectors and within the trucking industry, women make up a growing 6.2%.
Women Truck Driving Jobs
According to the American Trucking Associations, there is need for about 60,000 OTR truck drivers. Despite the increasingly lucrative incentives being offered by companies, there is still a massive shortage. The average age range for women to enter this industry is 39 to 59. A great example of a woman and mother in trucking is 55-year old Lanelle Delvin who pursued trucking to provide financial stability for her son who was diagnosed with Osteoblastoma. In an interview with CNBC, she says, “I like being on my own and making my own decisions about how I’m going to get the job done”. Though she likes being on her own, she also loves seeing her family, so she takes two-to-three day breaks. A big reason that she decided to get her CDL license and become an OTR driver is because of the financial security.
